Psychological Horror
Directed by: Anthony DiBlasi
Starring: Jessica Sula
Synopsis: A rookie police officer willingly takes the last shift at a newly decommissioned police station in an attempt to uncover the mysterious connection between her father’s death and a vicious cult.
Malum starts off very strong which only becomes more frustrating as the movie goes because there’s so much potential here.
Jessica Sula is phenomenal as Officer Loren, the rookie working the last shift in a building where her father inexplicably murdered some of his fellow cops. There’s a few scenes where everything around her is chaotic, cheesy and weird but she still sells them. She’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
There are parts of this movie that work really well in building up the dread and the tension that are ruined almost immediately by the director wanting to do some weird overly artistic nonsense. I have no issues with a movie wanting to take chances and try new things but you have to credibly weave it within the rest of the story. Malum is a movie about a haunted police station, it didn’t need to try and be anything other than that. In the end, it’s an aggressively ok movie that could have been great.
Watch it for Jessica Sula.
